“Fertilizer executives are making out like bandits…”

11/18/2021

An opinion piece taking the “Fertilizer Oligopoly” to task recently appeared on AgWeb.com, Farm Journal’s website. The editorial, authored by Jon Doggett, CEO of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), calls attention to big fertilizer corporations that “…are making out like bandits at the expense of the people who feed and fuel America.”

Doggett points up two instances of what he dubs the “Fertilizer Oligopoly” filing petitions with the International Trade Commission (ITC) resulting in tariffs being placed on fertilizer coming from Morocco, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago. He named Mosaic and CF Industries as the companies that sought tariff help from ITC, claiming severe weather and other factors leading to harm to U.S. companies from imports.

“We…encourage fertilizer companies (to) remember who their customers are. Rather than spreading inaccurate information about the threat of imports, they should be helping farmers spread affordable fertilizer.”
