University research in Illinois and Wisconsin has shown a yield penalty of 10 – 20 percent is common in corn following corn when compared to fields where corn follows soybeans, and the penalty can increase year on year. Field research is showing that a residue management plan that includes EXCAVATOR powered by MICROBILIZE™ will help growers avoid that penalty and preserve yields.

“Farmers that want to stay with corn year over year on any given field will benefit from having a good residue management plan,” says Eric Winans, Ph.D., who carries out research at Brandt Research Farms in Sangamon County, Illinois. Winans says this year he conducted a study with Meristem’s EXCAVATOR and saw great results.

“In our continuous corn-on-corn study, our preliminary findings show 242.2 bu./A. with the EXCAVATOR, compared with 231.5 on the untreated ground,” said Winans. “Also, when we compared soil tests pulled in untreated ground versus EXCAVATOR, we saw an average of 20 more pounds of P and 65 more pounds of K with EXCAVATOR.”
